Canada’s Combat Ship Team unveils CSC solution combining innovative Canadian technology with the world’s most advanced warship and Made-in-Canada Sonar Technology

HALIFAX , Nova Scotia, July 20, 2018 – Ultra Electronics is delighted to be a member of the Canadian Surface Combatant Home Team that is offering the Type 26 Global Combat Ship as Canada’s future surface combatant. Ultra Electronics has facilities in Dartmouth, Montreal and Ottawa employing more than 511 people across Canada. Drawing on our more than 70 years of experience supplying world leading defence equipment to both Canada and international customers, Ultra will be the leader of the Underwater Warfare component for the Frigate on the CSC Home Team. This work will generate high-tech jobs in Nova Scotia for sonar design, manufacturing, and through life-support, and add to our existing significant export capability.

The all-digital hull-mount sonar, UK Sonar 2150, which was specifically developed for the UK Royal Navy’s T-23 and T-26 frigates, will be manufactured in our facility in Dartmouth, where it will be supported through the life of the CSC program. This sonar combines a highly evolved digital high-performance ASW capability with a mine-avoidance capability and an integrated torpedo defence capability. This sonar is the third-generation hull-mount sonar for Ultra, and draws on the capabilities developed for the UK Type 45, Australian Hobart Class, and the UK S2170 for torpedo defence.

The towed low-frequency active sonar, which has its roots in the advanced developments from the Defence Research and Development Canada, will also be manufactured in our Dartmouth facility as it was for the Royal Dutch Netherlands Navy. Our role on the CSC Home Team will enable Ultra to bring to the Royal Canadian Navy our most advanced products that were developed with Canadian support and successfully exported to UK, Australia, and other NATO nations. For the CSC Home Team, we will be drawing on our extensive Canadian supply chain that we have successfully used in multiple previous opportunities and are ready on day one!
